OntoFrameNet (OFN) is an experimental translation of FrameNet 1.2 into OWL, linked as a plugin to the DOLCE+ Ultralite library. This FrameNet OWL ontology has been engineered by Aldo Gangemi. It consists of a reengineering of the so-called 'upper-level ontology' of FrameNet, defined by Srini Narayanan in OWL-Full, and of a reengineering of the FrameNet database, originally lifted to OWL-Full by Srini Narayanan. OntoFrameNet is OWL-Lite. Properties have been redistributed where necessary between object, datatype, or annotation, also correcting some syntactic and xsd-related issues. The ontology has been aligned to the 'Descriptions and Situations' (DnS) ontology, so that all frames and frame elements are now individuals, with a clear advantage for reasoning and management of their lifecycle. Where the semantics is clear, classes and properties have been aligned to DnS classes and properties. For example, fn:Frame is now a subClassOf edns:description, fn:FrameElement is a subClassOf edns:concept, the subClassOf property defined originally between frame elements and either other frame elements or semantic types has been translated to the 'edns:specializes'object property from DnS, etc. POS declarations have been moved to object properties, making POSes owl individuals (concepts in DnS). An alternative translation of the OWL-Full ontology could be done by treating frames as classes and frame elements as either classes, or object properties. These alternatives will be discussed in a technical report, but they have serious shortcomings, due to the difficulty of linking frame elements between them if they are represented as object properties, or the difficulty of 'framing' elements into frames if they are represented as classes.
