  • Title: Recognising Geographical Entities in Scottish Historical Documents
  • Abstract: This paper describes some experiments with recognising occurrences of geographical entities in the Statistical Accounts of Scotland (SAS). We use an off-the-shelf maximum entropy tagger which yields results comparable to state-of-the-art Named Entity Recognition systems for location names on newswire data. This effort comes from the need to explicitly georeference the SAS and similar collections in order to make them inherently geographically searchable
